James Marvel has developed a remarkable new method of approaching auditions that has worked for performers on every level of the industry. The method is simple to learn, easy to apply, and has yielded remarkable results for disciplined performers eager to take control of their careers. His private students range from singers preparing for young artist programs and agent auditions to singers who are currently performing at venues such as New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and La Scala. He has taught these methods privately and in workshops at a variety of training programs, including the Boston University Opera Institute and young artist programs at Utah Festival Opera, Virginia Opera, Intermezzo, and the San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows.
The method consists of strategies that apply to every aspect of the audition experience --from the moment you enter the room to actually staging your own arias. While private sessions often involve his helping to stage your arias, the method is designed to help the performer become self-sufficient, independent, and empowered as an auditioner in the field of opera. He addresses the psychology of auditioning, specific skills and techniques designed to keep the auditor's attention fixed on your audition, and a means of becoming accountable for every dramatic moment that occurs in an audition.
The emphasis in these sessions is not on singing, but on acting, making certain that your body is telling the same story that the music is telling. Particular attention is paid to making stronger dramatic choices -- specific choices that add depth, clarity, and punctuation to your storytelling. We will discuss your strengths and weaknesses as an auditioner, set specific goals, and then achieve them. The approach is very result oriented. I expect you to achieve your goals.
What is required in a private session?
An accompanist is not required for private sessions, although some performers prefer to use an accompanist or even a CD player.
Sessions are generally two hours, although I do make exceptions for students with whom I work regularly.
Most students rent a studio at Michael Carson Studios; NOLA Studios (212.582.1417); Shetler Studios (212.246.6655); or one of the three New York Spaces locations (212.799.5433). However, I have worked in people's apartments, offices, and elsewhere. Confirmation of a space is required before an appointment can be confirmed.
Fee is discussed privately.
There is a 24 Hour Cancellation Policy.
